Sharing in a ratio
A ratio says how to split an amount into unequal shares. Learn the parts method, and how to work from one share to the rest.
Task 1Parts and shares4 questions
A ratio such as 3:2 splits an amount into equal parts. The first person gets 3 parts and the second gets 2.
- Step 1: add the numbers in the ratio. That is the total number of parts
- Step 2: divide the amount by the total number of parts. That is the value of one part
- Step 3: multiply one part by each number in the ratio
Worked example: £500 shared 3:2. There are 5 parts. One part is 500 ÷ 5 = £100. The shares are £300 and £200.
Check by adding the shares. They must come back to the amount you started with.
