How to write and simplify a ratio
A ratio compares two amounts in order. Write one the right way round, put both amounts in the same units, and cut it down to its simplest form.
Task 1Writing a ratio2 questions
A ratio compares two amounts. 5:3 is said "5 to 3".
The order matters. The ratio of compost to bark puts the compost first.
Worked example: 20 bags of compost and 12 bags of bark. Compost to bark is 20:12. Bark to compost is 12:20.
A ratio can also compare a part with the whole. Add the parts to get the whole: compost to all the bags is 20:32.

You work out a figure, pick the right answer and match pairs.
Task 3Same units first2 questions
You work out a figure and find the mistake in a table.
