Money has two decimal places. A sum can give three or more, so the answer has to be rounded.

  • Step 1: look at the third decimal place
  • Step 2: if it is 5 or more, the second decimal place goes up by one
  • Step 3: if it is 4 or less, the second decimal place stays as it is
  • Step 4: drop everything after the second decimal place

Worked example: £3.476 has a third decimal place of 6, so it rounds up to £3.48. £3.472 has a third decimal place of 2, so it stays at £3.47.
