Working with an accountant

An accountant can prepare your return, but the records and the responsibility stay with you. See what to hand over and what it costs.

This path is practice in how the records and the sums work. It is not tax advice. Any rate or allowance in a question is an example for that question, so check GOV.UK for the current figures.

Task 1Who does what4 questions

An accountant can prepare your accounts and your tax return from your records, and can tell you what the rules mean for you.

You are still responsible for the return. If a figure is wrong because the records were wrong, it is your return that is wrong.

  • Your income and expenses record, totalled
  • Your invoices and receipts, filed in order
  • The business bank statements for the whole tax year
  • Your mileage log, and your notes on any shared costs

Hand the records over soon after the tax year ends on 5 April. Leaving it until January risks missing the 31 January deadline.
