How to write an invoice

An invoice asks for payment and is your record of the sale. Learn what goes on one, add up the lines and post it.

This path is practice in how the records and the sums work. It is not tax advice. Any rate or allowance in a question is an example for that question, so check GOV.UK for the current figures.

Task 1What goes on an invoice3 questions

An invoice is a request for payment. Your copy of it is your record of the sale.

  • Your name and address, and the customer's
  • An invoice number that is used only once
  • The invoice date
  • What you did or supplied, and the price of each line
  • The total, when it is due and how to pay

Invoice numbers run in order, with no gaps and no repeats. That way every sale can be found, and none is missed or counted twice.
