How to claim mileage
A flat rate for each business mile can stand in for the real running costs of a car. Keep a mileage log and do the sum, with the rate given.
This path is practice in how the records and the sums work. It is not tax advice. Any rate or allowance in a question is an example for that question, so check GOV.UK for the current figures.
Task 1The mileage log3 questions
Instead of splitting the real running costs, a sole trader can often use a flat rate for each business mile.
The rates are set by HMRC and can change, so every question here gives its own rate. The current rates and the rules are on GOV.UK.
Either way you need a mileage log. It shows the date, where you went, why, and the miles.
| Date | Trip | Reason | Miles |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Oct | Home to Mill Park and back | Group walk, four dogs | 12 |
| 2 Oct | Pet wholesaler and back | Buying leads and treats | 18 |
| 3 Oct | Her sister's house and back | Private | 22 |
| 4 Oct | A new client's house and back | First meeting | 9 |
| 5 Oct | Supermarket and back | Private | 6 |
