How to check you are paid at least the minimum wage
The law sets the least a worker can be paid for each hour. Work out pay per hour the way the check does, and see what counts as pay.
This path is practice in how the records and the sums work. It is not tax advice. Any rate or allowance in a question is an example for that question, so check GOV.UK for the current figures.
The law sets a minimum wage: the least a worker can be paid for each hour of work. The rate depends on age and changes every year, so this room uses a made-up rate.
The check takes the pay for a pay period, divides it by the hours worked in that period, and compares the answer with the minimum rate.
Every hour of work counts, paid or not. Training, a staff meeting and time spent closing up after the shop shuts are all work.
In this room the minimum rate is £12.50 an hour, for practice only. Rosa serves in the bakery's café for £13.50 an hour.
| Work | Hours |
|---|---|
| Shifts in the café, paid | 30 |
| Closing up after the café shuts, not paid | 6 |
You sort items into the right place, work out a figure and pick the right answer.
