Notes for this questionfrom Percentage increase and decrease
Here you know the old figure and the new figure, and want the change as a percentage.
- Step 1: find the change, which is the gap between the new figure and the old one
- Step 2: divide the change by the old figure
- Step 3: multiply by 100
Worked example: a tin of paint goes from £20 to £25. The change is £5. 5 ÷ 20 = 0.25, and × 100 gives an increase of 25%.
Always divide by the old figure, never the new one.
